Queen sends condolences on Air France disaster

LONDON (AFP) — Queen Elizabeth II has sent a personal message of condolence to French President Nicolas Sarkozy over the Air France tragedy, Buckingham Palace said on Wednesday.

"I was deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Air France 447 with 228 people on board," the monarch wrote.

"I would like to send my heartfelt sympathy to the families and friends of those who are involved. At this difficult time, all those affected by this tragedy are in our thoughts and prayers."

More than half of the 228 passengers on the Airbus A330 that went missing over the Atlantic on a flight from Rio de Janerio to Paris were French or Brazilian. The others came from 30 countries, mostly in Europe.
